Genocide Webquest

Introduction

For this unit we have spent a great deal of time learning about the events of the Holocaust during World War II. Some of the effects of such human rights violations as the Holocaust are depicted above. However, in the beginning of this lesson I asked you to consider this question: "Can another Holocaust occur again or has it already happened? This assignment, which will be used to provide research for your final assessment, will ask you to look beyond the events of the Holocaust and connect them to modern cases of genocide or human rights violations.

Your Task

Each of you are asked to join together into teams to study situations in various places across the world to determine if another Holocaust has occurred and if so, what can be done to prevent such mass killings.

Each group will study an instance of genocide and compare the common factors of their particular genocide with the Holocaust. You will identify the progressive stages of genocide that led to the massacres and what could have prevented further progression at each stage and compare these to the steps which led to the Holocaust of World War II.

You will use the research gained through this webquest to complete a digital story which tells the story of your particular case of genocide and how it compares to the events and techniques used in the Holocaust.

Process

- Read the website Genocide Defined as well as the Eight Stages of Genocide.

- Choose one case of Genocide which you would like to research.

- Use the suggested websites to research the selected case of genocide.

- There are websites provided with information about the Holocaust as well, which can be used in addition to classroom notes in order to provide a basis for comparison.

-Track your case of genocide as well as the Holocaust through the eight stages of genocide.

- Your final assessment will be to transform your research into a digital story which talks about your case of genocide and how it is either similar or different to the Holocaust. Can or was anything be done to prevent it?
