This novel deals with the historical event of the Holocaust. One of the reactions to this event was a promise that the world would never allow such events, including the mass extermination of a group of people, to happen again. Think about other major events in history. Has there been one or more historical events which you could think of in which large numbers of people were killed and persecuted?

I think that an event such as the Holocaust has occurred and is occurring right now in the country of Africa. In Rhwanda, following independence from their colonial oppressors, Belgium, the Hutu majority seized power and attacked the Tutsi minority, killing over 800,000 Tutsi with machine guns and machetes. Some statistics say that over 10,000 Tutsi were killed each day. In response to the deaths of Belgium peacekeeping forces the United States and Europe began to pull out their personnel, however the world did nothing to evacuate the Tutsi civilian population.

I agree with what Ashley was saying, there are events which have occurred and are occurring right now in which large groups of people are being killed due to religion, their ethnicity, or other factors. The situation in Darfur right now is one of the most prominent as is the cultural destruction of those in Tibet by the Chinese government, where many of their cultural landmarks have been destroyed.
